4,100 CVEC Customers Lose Power

TALLADEGA, Ala. - An estimated 4,100 Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative customers lost power early Friday morning when an Alabama Power transmission line was knocked out.

Storms moving through the region late Thursday and early Friday brought with them heavy rains, thunder and lightening. Alabama Power spokesmen said that lightening struck insulators on a 115,000-volt transmission line that carried power to CVEC's Stockdale and Eureka substations, causing more than 4,100 CVEC customers to lose power.

"All of the power that CVEC purchases is sent over Alabama Power transmission lines to CVEC's system," said Frank Kujawski, CVEC general manager. "When Alabama Power loses those transmission lines, we lose power to our substations."

Kujawski added that power to CVEC customers fed off of the Stockdale and Eureka substations, which includes most of the northern half of Talladega County, was restored by 7 a.m. Friday.

Coosa Valley Electric, which serves more than 15,000 customers in Talladega, St. Clair, Shelby, Clay, Etowah and Calhoun counties, is a Touchstone Energy7 cooperative. Nationwide, some 1,000 cooperatives provide power to rural America, and 570 of those operate under the Touchstone Energy umbrella.
