CVEC Board Gets Two New Members
TALLADEGA, Ala. - Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative has two new members on
its Board of Trustees.
At a special meeting August 7, the Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative Board of
Trustees appointed Marie Moore representative for District 4.
Ms. Moore, a resident of Talladega, is wife of former board member Harlie Moore.
Harlie Moore, who previously held the District 4 seat, died in April.
"The Board interviewed 8 candidates for the position and felt that with
her knowledge of the cooperative operations and history Ms. Moore would do the
best job," said Dr. Jim Winn, CVEC Board president and former Calhoun County
Schools superintendent.
Ms. Moore has lived in the Talladega area 25 years and has been a CVEC member
30 years. She was born and raised in Calhoun County, where she and her late
husband were in the first graduating class at Wellborn High School.
Ms. Moore said she takes her responsibility as a Board trustee very seriously.
"I think it's important that directors stay in touch with their constituents.
I think you just need to show appreciation that you were elected to a position,"
Ms. Moore said.
In an election held Saturday, August 17, District 5 members chose Buddy Watson
to represent them on the Board. In a 104 to 46 vote, Watson defeated incumbent
Vick McDonald, who had held the seat for 12 years.
Watson, a resident of Vandiver, had served previously on the Coosa Valley Electric
Board from 1978 to 1982.
He operated Watson's Grocery from 1962 to 1980. In 1980, he went to work at
Baptist Montclair Hospital until this year, when he decided to retire.
Watson is an active member of community, even helping organize the Vandiver
Volunteer Fire Department.
"Since I have retired from Baptist Montclair, I feel that I can direct
my energies to serving the people of district 5."
The seven members of the CVEC board of trustees represent the cooperative's
seven districts and are elected to staggered three-year terms. This year, the
seats for District 2 and District 5 were up for election. However, District
2 representative and Lincoln resident Howard Carmichael had no opposition and
will retain his seat for another three years.
Coosa Valley Electric, which serves more than 15,000 customers in Talladega,
St. Clair, Shelby, Clay, Etowah and Calhoun counties, is a Touchstone Energy®
cooperative. Nationwide, some 1,000 cooperatives provide power to rural America,
and 570 of those operate under the Touchstone Energy umbrella.
