CVEC Energizes New Substation

AUG. 20, 2002, TALLADEGA, Ala. - Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative energized a new substation at the intersection of Eastaboga and Turners Mill roads today.

Since the announcement of the Honda manufacturing facility in Lincoln, Coosa Valley Electric's growth in and around Lincoln has increased significantly. To accommodate this growth and improve system reliability, Coosa Valley built this substation with a maximum capacity of 20MVA. This capacity is equivalent to the amount of power needed to serve approximately 4,000 homes.

The Eastaboga Substation will tie to the existing Lincoln, Stockdale and Eureka substations to allow switching of loads between the four substations during maintenance, storm and transmission outages. Areas that will normally be served from the new substation range from Speedway Boulevard to the Coosa Valley Industrial Park on Highway 77 to Stockdale Road.

"The addition of the Eastaboga Substation shows Coosa Valley Electric's continued commitment to providing reliable consumer service," said Frank Kujawski, CVEC general manager. "With Honda and all of the related industries that are coming to this area, this new substation will not only meet our needs for today but position us for responsible system growth for many years to come."

The Eastaboga Substation is the 11th on Coosa Valley Electric's distribution system, which serves more than 15,000 customers in Talladega, St. Clair, Shelby, Clay, Etowah and Calhoun counties. CVEC is a membership (or consumer) -owned distribution cooperative and buys its power from Alabama Electric Cooperative, which is headquartered in Andalusia.

Coosa Valley Electric is a Touchstone Energy© cooperative. Nationwide, some 1,000 cooperatives provide power to rural America, and 570 of those operate under the Touchstone Energy umbrella.
