Westbrook, Pell City High Students Going to Washington D.C.
TALLADEGA, AL - Davis Varner and Annah Hodges each won a six-day trip to our
nation's capital in the Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative Youth Tour competition.
Sabrina Thomas earned the alternate slot and will go in the event one of the
winners cannot attend.
Varner is a junior at Westbrook Christian High School in Gadsden; Hodges is
a junior at Pell City High School, and Thomas is a junior at Talladega High
School.
"All of the students worked so hard throughout this process, we wish we
could send all of them on these tours," said Frank Kujawski, CVEC General
Manager. "They all did very well."
Sixteen students competed this year in the Youth Tour competition. The event
is for 11th graders and attracted participants from 11 schools in the CVEC service
area.
Participating students wrote essays, completed written exams testing their knowledge
of electric cooperatives and submitted to a panel interview with members of
the CVEC Board of Trustees.
Each of the school-level winners received a $50 savings bond.
In the Youth Tour competition, students receive points for the essay, the written
exam and the interview.
The two students with the highest totals will receive two all-expenses-paid
trips: one to Montgomery for three days in April; and a six-day trip to Washington,
D.C., in June.
"Both trips are an excellent opportunity for students to not only learn
about our government and our country, but they learn about electric cooperatives
as well," Kujawski said.
Cooperatives throughout the United States participate in the event, and the
local winners will join their counterparts from coast-to-coast in Washington,
D.C., in June.
Coosa Valley Electric, which serves more than 15,000 customers in Talladega,
St. Clair, Shelby, Clay, Etowah and Calhoun counties, is a Touchstone Energy®
cooperative. Nationwide, some 1,000 cooperatives provide power to rural America,
and more than 600 of those operate under the Touchstone Energy umbrella.
