Transmission Problems Knock out Power to 7,500 CVEC Members
TALLADEGA, Ala. - Some 7,500 Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative (CVEC) consumers
lost power early Thursday morning when an Alabama Power transmission system
failure interrupted power delivery to four of the cooperative's substations.
At approximately 5:30 a.m., transmission lines feeding the Eastaboga, Eureka,
Lincoln and Stockdale substations lost power.
"By 7:30 a.m., Alabama Power had restored power to three of our substations,"
said Frank Kujawski, CVEC general manager. "By 8 a.m., our crews had switched
loads and restored power to all consumers affected by the outage."
By 8:30 a.m. Kujawski said Alabama Power had restored service to all four substations,
and CVEC crews were redistributing the load.
"Our crews have done a fantastic job restoring power to our consumers.
When we have large outages like this one or even small ones, we have engineered
our system to make 'switching' loads possible. Depending on the time of year,
this procedure allows us to literally switch how electricity is delivered to
affected areas so power service can be restored. Once the cause of the outage
is corrected, the feeds can be switched back to normal operation," Kujawski
said.
Coosa Valley Electric buys its power from Alabama Electric Cooperative (AEC)
in Andalusia. Power is delivered from AEC to CVEC over Alabama Power transmission
through a process called "wheeling."
Coosa Valley Electric, which serves more than 15,000 customers in Talladega,
St. Clair, Shelby, Clay, Etowah and Calhoun counties, is a Touchstone Energy®
cooperative. Nationwide, some 1,000 cooperatives provide power to rural America,
and 570 of those operate under the Touchstone Energy umbrella.
