CVEC Restores power to 2,800 members, 200 to go

TALLADEGA, Ala. - Storms that rolled through the Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative (CVEC) service territory Wednesday afternoon initially left some 3,000 consumers without power, but by late Thursday afternoon, service had been restored to nearly 2,800.

The outages started about 2 p.m. in the Lincoln area with the first part of the storm front. As the storm moved through, however, outages occurred throughout the cooperative's power distribution system.

Crews worked through the night restoring power to the majority of affected consumers. To expedite restoration efforts, CVEC activated the cooperative's statewide emergency response network of cooperative crews. The needed crews came from Cullman and Central Alabama Electric Cooperatives located in Cullman and Prattville, respectively.

"While we were able to restore power to most of our affected consumers early, the ones who remain out are requiring the largest amount of work," said Jon Cullimore manager of marketing and member services for CVEC. "One storm of that magnitude can do significant damage to a power distribution system, and we had several in a row. Overall, our system performed remarkably well. It's just going to take some time to restore power to those areas that suffered the greatest damage."

Coosa Valley Electric, which serves more than 15,000 customers in Talladega, St. Clair, Shelby, Clay, Etowah and Calhoun counties, is a Touchstone Energy® cooperative. Nationwide, some 1,000 cooperatives provide power to rural America, and 570 of those operate under the Touchstone Energy umbrella.
