Storm Knocks Out Power to 1,000 CVEC Consumers

TALLADEGA, Ala. – A storm system that rolled through Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative’s service territory Tuesday afternoon knocked out power to some 1,000 consumers living in and around the Eureka and Talladega areas.

At about 1:50 p.m. strong winds and active lightning damaged some of the cooperative’s critical distribution facilities, the most significant of which were main lines feeding from the Talladega and Eureka substations. One of those lines spans the Coosa River parallel to Stemley Bridge along Stemley Bridge Road (Alabama Highway 34).

By 3:15 p.m., power to most areas had been restored, including most of the approximately 362 consumers served on the west of the Coosa River. The damaged line however will take longer to repair.

Coosa Valley Electric, which serves more than 15,500 customers in Talladega, St. Clair, Shelby, Clay, Etowah and Calhoun counties, is a Touchstone Energy® cooperative. Nationwide, some 1,000 cooperatives provide power to rural America, and more than 600 of those operate under the Touchstone Energy umbrella.
