Leadership Perspective: Your Community, Your Meeting

Your Cooperative, Your Meeting

Jon Cullimore is the general manager of Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative.

Every year, Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative holds its Annual Membership Meeting. While the event has become a tradition, the meaning behind it is about more than just fellowship.

For nearly a century, electric cooperatives have been built on the idea that local people working together can accomplish more than what any of us could achieve alone. Our Annual Meeting brings us all together to celebrate those accomplishments, which makes the event unique to cooperative forms of business.

Coosa Valley Electric’s meeting is divided into 2 main parts. The first is a “thank you,” and the second is a required business session to act on important matters that may need to go before the entire membership. In all, it is an undeniable reminder that our cooperative belongs to you, the members we serve.

Unlike investor-owned utilities, electric cooperatives are owned by the people who receive their services. Every member has a stake in the organization and a voice in its future. The Annual Meeting provides an opportunity for you to exercise that voice and to learn more about the organization you own.

This year, our Annual Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, at the International Motorsports Hall of Fame Speed Dome. Our goal for this meeting is to ensure you are informed, as well as engaged and involved.

We’ll kick things off around 8 a.m. with coffee and donuts. A little later, we’ll start the multiple rounds of Bingo and continue until we run out of prizes. We’ll also have fresh, hot hot dogs with snacks and drinks for all attendees.

After a few hours of fun, we’ll get the business meeting underway. We’ll provide you with updates on the cooperative's financial performance, major projects, and plans for the future.

The electric utility industry continues to evolve, facing new challenges related to power supply, technology, cybersecurity, and infrastructure investments. The Annual Meeting provides us with the opportunity to discuss these issues with you openly and explain how they may impact you and our business. Conversely, the event also gives you an opportunity to connect with us on a personal level. You can meet trustees, management, and employees, ask questions, and gain a better understanding of the work that goes into providing reliable electric service to homes, farms, businesses, and industries throughout our service area.

Whether you have been a member for decades or recently joined, your participation in this event matters. Every member who attends helps strengthen the organization and reinforces the values upon which it was founded. Whether you come to play Bingo, ask questions, or simply stay informed, your presence helps ensure we remain accountable to you, the members.

We hope you will join us on Saturday, September 19. We look forward to sharing the accomplishments of the past year, discussing the opportunities ahead, and celebrating the cooperative spirit that continues to power our communities.

After all, this is your Annual Meeting.
