Plug Into Savings

CVEC Offers EV Rebates While Preparing for a Smarter Energy Future

By Jackie Edmondson, Manager of Marketing and Member Services

As electric vehicles continue to gain traction across the country, members of Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative have an opportunity to plug into savings while helping shape the future of energy use in their communities.

Through an incentive program, Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative is offering a $100 rebate to members who own or lease an all-electric vehicle that’s registered within the CVEC service territory. The rebate is available after completing a simple online application, with 1 incentive allowed per eligible vehicle.

The incentive provides some cash in members’ pockets, but it also helps CVEC track the number and usage of EVs across the system so the Cooperative can better plan for long-term infrastructure needs and ensure efficient rate structures for all members.

“There are more electric vehicles on our system than most people realize, but not everyone is taking advantage of the rebate,” said Lucas Browning, energy services representative. “If you own an EV, we encourage you to register it. The registration information helps us plan for the future.”

To qualify, members must have active service with Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative and own or lease a fully electric, plug-in vehicle. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid models are not eligible, and the program is limited to full-size passenger vehicles. Motorcycles, e-bikes, golf carts, and utility terrain vehicles do not qualify. Vehicles must also have current registration tied to an active account on the CVEC system.

Interest in electric vehicles is steadily growing within the CVEC footprint. Currently, 77 EVs are registered across the service territory, representing a wide range of manufacturers. Tesla leads the way with 35 vehicles, followed by Ford with 17. Other brands, including Rivian, Kia, Hyundai, and several luxury manufacturers, are also part of the mix. Despite the growth, participation in the rebate program remains low, with only 7 applications submitted in 2025.

“We have a real opportunity to connect with our members who are interested in EVs,” he said. “We know EV adoption is growing, and we want to make sure those drivers are aware of the resources available to them and are taking full advantage of the benefits that come with being part of Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative.”

The appeal of going electric extends beyond incentives. EVs offer lower fuel costs, reduced maintenance, and a quieter, smoother driving experience. Without the need for oil changes or many of the mechanical components found in traditional gasoline engines, owners often see long-term savings over the life of the vehicle.

There are environmental benefits of EVs as well. They produce zero tailpipe emissions, which helps reduce air pollution and overall carbon output.

“When paired with CVEC’s commitment to reliable and increasingly efficient energy generation, EVs can play a meaningful role in a cleaner energy future,” Browning said.

For Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative, the rise of EV adoption represents an opportunity and a responsibility. Understanding when and how members charge their vehicles allows CVEC to anticipate demand, strengthen the grid, and continue delivering reliable, affordable power. That’s why the rebate program matters.

“It’s a simple step that makes a big difference,” Browning said. “The more we know, the better we can serve our members today and down the road.”
